How to have a stress-free holiday gift-giving

It’s 11 days to go before Christmas. With the pandemic, do you still want to give gifts to your loved ones? If yes, REBPH enumerates these tips for a stress-free gift-giving tradition.

Christmas is just around the corner. For us Filipinos, this season is the most joyful of all the holidays. We are proud that our Christmas celebration is recognized as the longest and merriest in the world.

Christmas is an important time for families and friends. That’s why it is not surprising to see many people go on a holiday shopping spree to buy the best gifts for their loved ones. Despite the hassle, our celebration wouldn’t be complete without gift-giving as it is a gesture of showing and expressing love.

Aside from the sparkling lights and glittering decorations in our homes, what makes this season glowing and shining even brighter is when everyone around you receives and gives gifts.

And, to make this season more joyful, you need to prepare yourself for gift-giving. To get you started, here are few tips for a stress-free holiday gift-giving:

 Plan a gift-buying budget

Filipinos are generous gift-givers. But to save you from being financially drained after Christmas, you must spend based on what you make and what you’ve saved. Avoid stressing out over money by planning and setting your budget for Christmas gifts. Most of the holiday shoppers overspend because they don’t set a budget at all. Having a budget plan will lessen the opportunity for impulse buys. Assess how much you’ve got and whatever amount you’ve decided to spend, just make sure you stick to it. As you go shopping, you need to track your budget often to keep up with all that spending.

Here’s an additional tip to planning your budget for next Christmas — start saving early. Instead of forcing yourself to save in the last two or three months before Christmas, you can try to save all year long. If you do it little by little every month, you’ll be surprised by what you’ve come up with for your holiday spending budget.

Make a list

After planning your gift-buying budget, you need to start making a gift list. Take the time to sit down and get a piece of paper and a pencil. Making a list will ensure that no one is forgotten. Try to break the people on the list into groups like family, close relatives, friends, co-workers, or neighbors. This list will go alongside your budget plan and clearly allocate what you can afford and how much you will spend on each person. This will help you not to overspend on specific people, as well. When you’re prepared with a list, and you stick to it while shopping, it would also minimize the chance of unnecessary gift purchases.

Identify their interests

Next, you need to think and identify the interest of those on your shopping list. Write down the possible gift ideas you think they would like. Nothing feels more satisfying than watching them opening their gifts and seeing them smile because they like it. So, you need to think carefully about each person on your list. Remember, the key to giving the perfect gifts is to think about what the person’s needs and aspirations are. They will surely appreciate how personal and thoughtful you were for giving the best and perfect gift for them.

For example, since being a plantita/plantito is now a trend, consider giving them gardening tools like a set of a hand trowel, cultivator, shears and pruning tools, garden fork, rake, spade, and hoe, which are all essentials for beginner gardeners.

Maybe someone on your list is a work-from-home employee. You could get them a table lamp, office chair, organizer, or drawer. For recipients who have aspirations of becoming a chef or baker, get them kitchen tools and appliances, a cookware set, or food containers. For someone obsessed with home decorations, find those stylish home interior products such as wall decors, table centerpieces, figurines, and lightings. Also, a set of hardware tools such as hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, mallets, drills, saws, and wrenches would be a perfect gift for those who love to do handy projects.
