First, where are the suburbs?
A simple definition of the suburbs would be areas outside big cities and towns, sort of a gray area between urban and rural areas. On first thought, a suburban is often perceived as massive estates with single-detached houses and spacious gardens. However, the variety of dwellings in the suburbs is more expansive than one could imagine as it now also includes apartment complexes and condominiums.
A look at the suburbs
Popular culture often portrayed suburban living as bland, familial and slow paced, associated with the abundance of children and growing families. While not precisely false, the suburbs are also home to a considerable percentage of the working force who go back and forth to the city for education, work or any other regular transaction. This arrangement is why the suburbs are also often referred to as “bedroom communities.”
More space to move around
As mentioned, the suburbs are also known as bedroom communities. Comfortable, spacious and accommodating as a bedroom, the suburbs offer larger floor areas and more open spaces like backyards and gardens. Aside from the dwellings, communities in the suburbs are also significantly more extensive than those in urban areas. This characteristic translates to less busy streets and more spaces for social interactions, wherein the sight of children playing and grown-ups walking around is a regular occurrence.
Reimagining the daily commute
One of the things that makes one hesitate to live in the suburbs is the possibility of long commutes to and from the city. It is, however, a thing of the past. Several developments and expressways such as the Manila-Cavite Expressway and the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx), as well as the availability of shuttle services make commuting to and from the metro easier than it has ever been.
Apart from access to thoroughfares, the suburbs are also distanced from major roads where traffic jams can be a huge hassle, making residents from the suburbs less likely to experience the so-called “rush-hour” commutes.
Weekend getaways are a breeze
Bounding bustling urban areas and relaxing rural communities, the suburbs offer residents lots of options for weekend getaways and quick vacations. Sometimes, even the suburban communities themselves have their local parks and other amenities wherein, aside from relaxation, can also be avenues for creating close-knit relationships with other residents.
A lifetime investment
A home in the suburbs can serve as a long-term investment, a lifetime residence, and an heirloom for the next generation, especially if it is adequately maintained.
