The NLEX Corporation announced that construction of the estimated P7.89 billion Candaba 3rd Viaduct at the North-Luzon Expressway (NLEX) is 50 percent complete, in time for its expected opening by November this year.
The first girder was recently installed at the viaduct, which marks the transition from “groundwork-heavy construction to road-level work” on the project, according to the company.
It said the construction so far has attained “one million safe manhours” for the laborers assigned to the project.
“We are very glad that our chosen construction partner, Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited, is one with us in our objective to expedite work on the project, while prioritizing the safety of all workers and ensuring the structural soundness of the new bridge,” said NLEX Corporation President and General Manager J. Luigi Bautista.
The five-kilometer Candaba 3rd Viaduct is located between two bridges linking Pulilan, Bulacan, and Apalit, Pampanga.
Once opened to the public, the Candaba Viaduct will now have three lanes to accommodate more vehicles. The lanes will have inner and outer shoulders to ensure safety of motorists.
Bautista said, during the beginning of the viaduct’s construction, that the viaduct can allow an increased speed limit from 40 to 60 kilometers per hour (kph) to 60 to 80 kph. Large vehicles or trucks will also be diverted to the new bridge to relieve the existing bridges from carrying heavier vehicles.
The project has an estimated cost of P7.89 billion.
