DOTr supports green transport

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) pledged to support green transport projects and electric vehicles throughout the country as sustainable alternatives for the Filipino riding public.

DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista made the commitment Thursday, July 14, during the launch of the first mall-based free charging stations for electric vehicles at Megaworld Lifestyle Malls.

The national development plan for the electric vehicle industry is a big push for the promotion of electric vehicles in the country, he underscored.

For this reason, the DOTr will assist in the advancement of the Republic Act 11697, the Development of Electric Vehicle Industry in the Philippines.

The Megaworld Lifestyle Malls’ charging stations e-mobility initiative is the country’s first mall-based charging stations for electric bikes, scooters, vehicles, and public utility vehicles located at Uptown Bonifacio in BGC, Taguig City.

The free charging of electric automobiles is in partnership with DOTr, Department of Energy (DOE), and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

With the upcoming implementation of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, the DOTr and Megaworld partnership will continue to push for the expansion of electric vehicle usage in the country, the transport chief noted.

Furthermore, the DOTr will ensure that transport policies and projects are dovetailed on the preservation of the environment, Bautista assured.

Everything should comply with international environment standards to alleviate the impact of transportation on the environment.

Bautista likewise cited former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP)which improved transportation efficiency and reduced carbon emissions.

“The Department of Transportation launched programs to improve transportation efficiency and reduce emissions and pollutants from the public transportation sector,” he reiterated.
