Rex Gatchalian to NLEX: Apologize for heavy traffic, declare toll holiday

Good initiatives with good intention for everybody. The system is not yet perfect. This is birth pain that we have to embrace. REBPH looks forward to a day when everyone will appreciate this bold move.

MANILA, Philippines — Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian on Sunday told the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Corporation to apologize for the major traffic jam caused by the cashless toll collection system and declare a toll holiday.

“The least NLEX can do is: 1. Publicly apologize to the ridding general public, 2. While fixing its RFID system — toll holiday muna. Walang singilan hanggang madeliver nila ang maayos na service sa mga toll plaza nila (No payment of fees until they deliver good service at their toll plazas),” Gatchalian, who is a strong critic of NLEX’s new payment system, said in a tweet.

Gatchalian has blamed the RFID toll collection system for the slowing down of traffic flow in the city. He also threatened the NLEX Corporation that it will lose its business permit in Valenzuela if it fails to solve the traffic jam.

Similarly, the mayor’s brother, Valenzuela Rep. Wes Gatchalian, also urged the Department of Transportation to stop the implementation of the cashless toll collection system until operators resolve the glitches in their RFID systems.
