Megawide eyes another subway project

MANILA, Philippines — Infrastructure builder Megawide Construction Corp. is eyeing to bag another contract in the Metro Manila Subway Project, this time for the stations connecting Mandaluyong City and Taguig City.

Megawide president and CEO Edgar Saavedra told reporters that his company would participate in the bidding for Contract Package (CP) 105 of the P488.48-billion Metro Manila Subway Project.

CP 105 includes the stations from Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City to Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig City, as well as the tunnels linking them.

“We are still aiming for one more project to be bidded out by next year, the next section, the CP 105 and the others. Those are packages (that comprise) normally of a station and a tunnel line,” Saavedra said.

Further, Saavedra said Megawide would also bid for CP 108 and 109 once the government opens the two contracts for proposals. After the station in BGC, the Metro Manila Subway extends to at least  four stations namely, Lawton, Senate and FTI in Taguig City and Bicutan in Parañaque City.

In May, Megawide bagged CP 104 of the 33-kilometer underground railway, awarding the company the right to build the stations of Ortigas North and Ortigas South, or Shaw Boulevard.

The Ortigas package worth P17.75 billion also includes the tunnel connecting the two stations.

However, Saavedra said Megawide has yet to start the civil works for the Ortigas section, as the change in administration caused procedural disruptions that led to payment delays.

“There was a change of people in the organization. We expect that by the end of the year or by the first quarter of 2023, once all budget approvals happen, everything will return to normal,” Saavedra said.

“We had a discussion with the Secretary of the Department of Transportation. He confirmed that the government will really push and fast-track all the construction, but they will just get all of the budget approvals first prior to awarding,” he said.

Last week, Megawide and its Indian partner GMR Airports International BV announced that they agreed to a P25-billion deal to transfer full ownership of the GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp., the operator of the Mactan Cebu International Airport, to the Aboitiz Group by the end of 2024.
