Tugade Vows Completion Of Bohol Transport Infra Projects By 2022

The chief of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) vowed to complete the ongoing construction of infrastructure projects in Bohol before President Duterte bows out of office next year, aiming to stimulate trade and tourism in the province that is no exemption to the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the inauguration of the new passenger terminal building (PTB) of the Tagbilaran Port in Bohol, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said the department is determined to finish the infrastructure projects that it has started in Bohol, which is a major tourism destination in the country.

“It will be a pity if we just let the calamity-stricken infrastructure stand as such and not let the people use them. We will finish the projects in Bohol before the end of the term of President Duterte,” Tugade.

One of these projects, Tugade said, is the new PTB at the Tagbilaran Port, which was damaged by the strong earthquake in 2013. Completed in the fourth quarter of 2020, the new PTB was inaugurated on Wednesday.

From only 497 passengers, the new terminal can now handle as much as 1,110 passengers, or double its previous capacity.

“My only request to the local government is to take care of the new infrastructure so that more people can benefit from these for a longer period of time. If we do the inauguration within this context, I assure you, we will come back in the future and say, before, I said ‘mission accomplished,’ now, I’d say ‘we have delivered,’” Tugade said.

Bohol Governor Arthur Yap said the infrastructure projects in Bohol would enable the province to be “more progressive by achieving a diversified economy, especially amid the raging Covid-19 pandemic.”

“We really felt the impact of Covid-19 in the services sector. About 200,000 of our people lost their jobs. This showed us the diversity of our economy and that need to further diversity. It is really the right time to build more infrastructure where we can expand,” he said.

Aside from the Tagbilaran Port’s new terminal, the transportation department is also rebuilding the Port of Maribojoc in Bohol.

The Maribojoc port is also one of the vital infrastructures in the province that was totally devastated by the 2013 Bohol earthquake. With works on full swing, the Maribojoc Port Improvement Project is almost complete with a 95.41-percent progress rate as of March 2021.

“This month, we will finish Maribojoc for it to become a cargo port. I assure you that Maribojoc Port will become operational, at the earliest, next month, at the latest in the first week of June. So, consider it done and accomplished,” Tugade said.

There are 22 development projects that the DOTr is spearheading in the province, 21 of which are seaport development initiatives and the last one was the already-finished Bohol-Panglao International Airport.
