Access roads, expressway in Luzon, Visayas improved — DPWH

Three access roads in Luzon and Visayas, including an expressway portion, have recently been improved and completed, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced.  

Road widening and drainage rehabilitation works on Caloocan’s Old Zapote Road have been completed. The project covered a 1.296-kilometer portion of Old Zapote Road in Barangay 177 in Caloocan City. 

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said the completed road project under a P18.79-million budget is expected to address traffic congestion and recurrent flooding in the area.

“With this project, we have addressed the inefficient drainage system and road capacity of Old Zapote Road which serves as an access road going to Camarin Road and Deparo Road,” Villar (DPWH) said. 

Furthermore, an over two-kilometer stretch of the Roman Expressway in Bataan has been widened into six lanes, from an initial four.

“We recently completed the widening of its 2.12-kilometer portion in Pilar town amounting to P69.7 million, which improves the transport of goods and local products in the area by providing continuous flow of traffic with lesser build-up,” the secretary said. 

Another completed project is a P36.16-million maintenance work along the 919-linear-meter portion of the Roman Expressway in Balanga City, which covers road asphalt overlaying for a smoother travel.

Roman Expressway is a national arterial road traversing 10 Bataan towns. It caters to all types of vehicles from motorcycles to large truck trailers on a daily basis, making it one of the province’s busiest and most vital roads.

Meanwhile, a 1.32-kilometer access road leading to the Manlud Falls in Ajuy Town, Iloilo has also been recently completed.  

The tourism road that will provide tourists access to the hidden Manlud Falls in Barangay Sto. Rosario in Ajuy town was implemented under DPWH’s convergence program with the Department of Tourism (DOT).

Villar said the paving of the 1.32-kilometer portion or Phase 1 of Sitio Calubihan-Sitio Manlud Road was undertaken with a P15.45 million budget.

“This is just the beginning of a multi-year project that will facilitate the easier access of local and international tourists to this waterfall in Ajuy and benefit locals residing along the road,” he said. 

“Another 1.41 kilometer, 2-lane will be concreted next year as we have proposed its inclusion in the 2021 General Appropriations Act,” he added.

An allocation of P22 million will be needed to complete the tourism road project under its second and final phase.
